Prep!
Took the ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island and then drove North for a few hours. Prepping for a week of camping on a small island accessible only by Kayak in the Johnstone Strait.
Home sweet home
Small island between Vancouver Island and the North American mainland. Camped here for a week....no electric, toilets or anything. Just us and Mother Nature.
The gang!
Hanging out
Some nights, Orcas would stay around our island. You fall asleep listening to the Orcas exhaling from their blowholes.

Explore the mainland and other islands
Throughout the week, we would explore different parts of the coast. Got to see bears and other wildlife.
Eagles!
Eagles everywhere. So majestic. There is one perched on top of the dead tree in the middle.
Starfish
Lookout
Throughout the week, someone would be searching for Orcas migrating down the strait. When they see a fins, we would scramble from our tents, put on our gear and paddle out to meet them.
Up close
This is before Go-Pro and waterproof cameras, so it was hard to take a good picture while paddling.
6' Fins
Shot to give the scale of the Orca fins compared to a passing boat. Imaging being low to the water in a kayak in front of an Orca coming towards you. You swear you were going to collide and the fin will gracefully slide under the water and come up on the other side. You learn to tap the kayak with your paddle to warn the whales they were coming close.
